20th-Century Art
  • Hotel Gran Derby Barcelona

One of the city’s most distinctive contemporary art collections

The Hotel Gran Derby is home to one of the city’s most distinctive contemporary art collections. Its spaces display original works, lithographs, watercolors, and prints by major names in Catalan and international art, such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró, Joan Brossa, and Josep Maria Guinovart. The collection is complemented by pieces of African and Eastern art, 19th-century Chinese furniture, and iron sculptures placed in the hotel’s common areas.

This commitment is part of the philosophy of Derby Hotels Collection, a group chaired by Jordi Clos that brings together more than 5,000 works of art and antiques across its properties, conceived as true small museums. The Gran Derby collection, like the rest of the chain’s artistic heritage, is also open to the public: the works can be admired in the hotel’s common areas and are part of the cultural experience Derby Hotels offers to both guests and visitors to Barcelona, blurring the boundaries between hotel, gallery, and museum.

Asian and African antiques

At Hotel Gran Derby, two artistic worlds that may seem opposite at first glance come together in a profoundly complementary way. Contemporary works by artists such as Picasso, Miró, Dalí, and Tàpies interact with ancient African and Asian pieces, creating a visual journey that brings modernity and tradition into dialogue. The experimental strokes and creative freedom of twentieth-century artists contrast with the ritual, symbolic, and handcrafted nature of sculptures, masks, and objects from age-old cultures. This meeting of eras and geographies turns the hotel into a place of discovery, where guests can appreciate how different forms of artistic expression share the power to move us and tell universal stories.

On an antique piece of furniture, four Chinese characters can be read: 萬松里輝 (Wàn Sōng Lǐ Huī). The phrase can be understood as a reference to the splendor of a pine-filled setting, or as a place-name reference associated with Wansongli. Overall, the characters convey ideas of prosperity, prestige, and natural beauty, themes often found in traditional Chinese decoration.

The Gran Derby Hotel in Barcelona is part of the cultural universe of Derby Hotels Collection, driven by Jordi Clos, where every space is conceived as a dialogue between hospitality and art. In this hotel, contemporary art adds character and personality, with a special presence of works by Josep Maria Guinovart in the breakfast room. An experience that combines design, comfort, and cultural sensitivity in a prime location in Barcelona.
